Vision

ESCAN strives to foster an inclusive, globally connected European research community that inspires, improves and empowers society through cognitive, affective and social neuroscience research.

The fields of cognitive, affective and social neuroscience are interdisciplinary approaches aiming to understand the psychological and biological basis of thought, emotion and social relating.

These fields include both fundamental, translational and clinical scientists who are committed to discovery through mind and brain research and are motivated by the societal and knowledge advantages such discoveries could generate. ESCAN considers it both its privilege and responsibility to foster and promote this spirit of curiosity, collective learning and openness to new knowledge for the common good, as well as promote the values of scientific rigor.

Mission

The ESCAN mission implements our vision by serving, representing and enhancing strategic impact areas of scientific progress and culture. The new ESCAN Roadmap sets out the themes and goals that we’ll be focusing on as strategic priorities. These themes outline common needs from our research community across different sub-disciplines and career stages.

Research Excellence and Exchange. We aim to foster specialised knowledge exchange on research excellence.

Research Culture. We aim to empower the community, promote diversity and inclusion and society engagement, and open science practices.

Global Outlook. To embed ESCAN efforts in global scientific networks and achieve societal benefits.

Future Horizon. To invest in the future and support an active community of Early-Career Researchers.

These domains are closely linked and mutually supportive, with each reinforcing the others through shared activities and initiatives grounded in a common foundation of organizational values, leadership, and management. At the core of ESCAN's mission is a commitment to responsive, inclusive collaboration among various actions and stakeholders, aiming for lasting positive impacts on both science and society.
